An estimated 872,100 doctorate holders in science, engineering, and health were employed in the U.S. in 2021. They held doctorates in a wide variety of fields. While varying by field, 42.3% worked in educational institutions, 8.9% worked in government, and 48.8% worked in business/industry. Each circle in the diagram represents a fine field of doctorates and is sized to that field's proportion of the U.S.-residing employed science, engineering, and health doctorate population.
